If you have ever wondered where is the New Forest Cottage that was in Gone Fishing? The answer is Undercastle Cottage!

When Paul Whitehouse and Bob Mortimer teamed up to make their hit TV show Gone Fishing, they made a series that wasn’t just educational in terms of fishing but a show which felt like a huge, warm, friendly hug, with the audience listening to a couple of old friends who have both undergone major heart surgery, chuckling away with witty banter pondering life and the wonderful world of fishing.

What is the TV show Gone Fishing about?

If you’ve not watched the programme, the comedy legends’ premise is to tackle the skills, techniques, and equipment to catch specific species of fish each week from a picturesque fishing location in the UK. Undercastle Cottage was chosen as a venue for the first series as episode 6, which you can still view on BBC iPlayer.

Set on the banks of the famous Hampshire Avon River, our cottage and gardens provide a wow-worthy location on the banks of one of the UK’s most celebrated fishing rivers – The Hampshire Avon. The river originates in Wiltshire, flowing through the city of Salisbury before converging to a single river running along the western edge of the New Forest National Park and into Dorset before flowing into the large natural harbour in Christchurch. The river’s chalk bed and rich flora offer pristine, clear waters loaded with a bounty of insects for a plentiful food supply for the well-known hefty stocks of salmon and trout and huge barbel, chub and pike.

What happened in the TV episode at Undercastle?

In the Gone Fishing episode filmed at Undercastle Cottage, Bob and Paul attempt to catch a pike. Besides the magical musings and laugh-out-loud chatter, their fishing session didn’t yield a fish. But as with all fishing outings, while landing a fish is the goal, soaking up the therapeutic power of nature surrounded by beautiful scenery is just as much the goal for a successful day with your rod. Returning to the cottage for supper, Bob and Paul are later joined by a cardiologist to chat about living healthily after their heart scares. It turns out to be an interesting and insightful conversation.

Who can stay at Undercastle Cottage?

Many of the guests who rent Undercastle Cottage for a short break are fans of the TV show and have seen the cottage on the Mortimer and Whitehouse Gone Fishing? website. Undercastle Cottage can also organise private tuition for those who want to learn how to fish or improve their angling skills. Often, at least one of the six guests who holiday at Undercastle Cottage is keen to fish, and one of the best aspects of renting the cottage is those fishing won’t need to disappear for hours on end because the Hampshire Avon River literally runs along the bottom of the garden. So, lunch, dinner, snacks and a cuppa or glass of something cold and refreshing are only a few steps away on the sun terrace, where a dining table and comfy chair are found waiting along with non-fishing friends and family.
